MUAA club treasurer John Shaw took first place when the first round of the spring league was fished on the club's pool at Mathon on Sunday.
Conditions were not ideal with a gusty wind making presentation of a bait very difficult. John Shaw drew on island peg 1 and used his favourite value bread tactic. Legered close to the island John's bait was picked up almost immediately by a carp, and despite losing a few he managed five more carp to win the contest with 15-4-0.
In second place was Mike Spragg. Drawn on island peg 23, Mike also suffered lost fish but eventually landed four carp to 5lbs, using pole tactics, for a weight of 13-12-0 Last year's series winner Neil Humpage, made a steady start to his defence of the title by finishing in third spot.
Neil found the high winds to difficult to fish a pole in, and resorted to legering a grain of corn against the island from peg 3, this resulted in three nice carp coming to the net for a total of 12-3-0.
The next round of the spring league is at the pool on Sunday, April 15. Draw 9.30am fish 10am-2pm.
