BACKERS of a bid to take community control of Malvern Hills Outdoor Education Centre are meeting Worcestershire County Council officials today (Friday).

The centre in West Malvern was threatened with closure by the council, but then reprieved when a takeover by private firm Acorn Adventure was announced.

But a group of the centre’s staff, backed by local district, parish and county councillors, residents and outdoor education specialists, has launched its own bid.

Coun Beverley Nielsen said: “I hope the council really will be flexible and open. Whilst it has stated it has a preferred bidder, it is my hope that it will genuinely listen to the wishes of local residents.

“Many children’s lives have been transformed thanks to the quality of the service provided. We need to protect and grow this service, not to constrain it.

“Whilst doing a deal with a commercial international company may seem like a responsible option, it will not protect the unique character of this service.

“I am sure the county is serious about providing the support for local groups like our own who have the best interests of their residents and community at their heart. I am looking forward to hearing more from them.
