AN ambitious makeover of Upton is set to get under way this week.

Contractor Ringway, working for Worcestershire County Council, will start the improvements to make the town centre safer and more accessible on Monday.

The scheme includes new road surfaces, pavements and crossing points in High Street, Lower High Street and Old Street.

Other work includes moving a bus stop from Old Street to High Street, creating parking bays in High Street and New Street, and installing new finger-post signs.

It is hoped the work will boost the local economy by making the main shopping area in the town more attractive and safer for customers.

Construction work is expected to last 10 weeks and finish in time for Easter.

Access to businesses and frontages will be maintained at all times, though Old Street will be closed from January 28-February 1, Court Street from February 11-15 and High Street on March 17, 24 and 31.

Annette Keyworth, chairman of Upton Tourism and Trade Association, believes the project will complement recently-completed work on the Waterside and prove a real asset for the town.

“We are looking forward to it. It will cause a bit of disruption but it is the quietest time of year so the best time to be doing it,” she said.

“Ninety-five per cent of the traders in Upton signed up for it to be done and I think the lasting benefits will outweigh any short-term disruption.”

Councillor Simon Geraghty, cabinet member for economy and infrastructure at WCC, said: “This is a very exciting project and I’m sure residents will be looking forward to seeing the finished results.

“While delays are likely when works are taking place, I’m sure the end result will be well worth it. The effects of the improvements will hopefully see a boost to the number of visitors in the main shopping area and improve the area for residents and tourists alike.”

A drop-in shop will open from Monday at 34 Old Street, where residents, businesses and visitors can receive updates, look over the plans and ask questions. A dedicated customer care line is also being set up on 01905 761176.
