THIS year marks the 35th anniversary of Malvern-based Old Meg Morris, and the side is looking for new members.

The team was founded in 1977 as an all-female side, but for the last 13 years has included male dancers as well.

Its dances are based on the traditions of mill workers in north-west England, who danced in clogs on cobbled streets, making a loud rhythmic sound as they stamped out the dance steps.

The dances are named after towns such as Prescot, Peover and Mobberley, and include the use of sticks, garlands, slings and bells to add to the spectacle.

Old Meg performs regularly at fetes, festivals and fairs, both local and national, the most recent being the Worcester Christmas Fair.

Many summer evenings are also spent at local hostelries, entertaining the regulars.

Dancers range from aged 15 upwards and practices are on Tuesday evenings from 8pm at Poolbrook Hall on Poolbrook Road, Malvern, next to the Three Horseshoes pub.

Founder member Anne Lewis said: “Joining is a wonderful way to stay fit and improve your social life. No previous experience is necessary, just enthusiasm and a basic sense of rhythm.

“If you play a musical instrument, there is also the opportunity to play with like-minded people in a supportive and friendly atmosphere.”

If you are interested, contact Mrs Lewis on 01684 574628 or go along to the practices.
