A MALVERN college looking to recruit a dozen apprentices is struggling to find young people for the positions.

South Worcestershire College, which has a campus in Malvern and Evesham, has been on the look-out for 12 apprentices to take on positions in local companies and expects more to become available in the near future.

But despite the current economic downturn, the new recruits are proving difficult to find.

Under the scheme the apprentices would work at a selection of local businesses with a view to being offered a permanent position at the end of their placement.

The employers the college are working with include, Wychavon District Council, Malvern Hills District Council, Amcor Flexibles, Allen Fabrications Ltd, Billy Shears Hair Salon, Snips Hair Salon and Estate Protection Services (Midland) Ltd.

Currently the college has advertised the positions on the National Apprenticeships website but only received on average two to three responses for each one.

They said normally they would hope for as many as 20 applications for an apprenticeship.

Viv Gillespie, interim principal, said: “We all hear about the job market and how difficult it is but we are saying we have opportunities, please come and find out about them.

“It may be the time of year, people may think these things only start in September.

“It could also be the particular areas, such as business administration.

“They may not be aware apprenticeships exist in these areas.

“There are very good opportunities here with great employers.”

Those who would like to find out more about these positions or need more information should contact the work-based learning team on 01386 712690.

The college will also be holding an apprenticeship event at its Evesham campus on Thursday, February 7, between 5pm and 7pm, when advice, guidance and have-ago sessions will be available.

Employers looking to recruit apprentices are also welcome and should call Steph Morris on 01386 712603 for further details.
