A MAN has died in a crash between a car and a lorry in Malvern which closed the A449.

The man, aged in his 20s, and thought to be from Malvern, was declared dead at the scene of the crash on the road between Newland and Bastonford at about 1.20pm on Wednesday.

The man was driving a red Peugeot 106 towards Worcester when the collision happened with a blue Renault HGV travelling in the opposite direction.

An ambulance, a rapid response vehicle, a paramedic area support officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Strensham were dispatched to the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “The car was found to have overturned and was on its roof.

“The driver of the car, a man, had suffered multiple injuries and was found to be in cardiac arrest.

“Full resuscitation attempts were immediately carried out.

“Sadly, despite best efforts of ambulance crews nothing could be done to save the man.

The lorry driver, a man, was assessed at the scene but was found to be uninjured.”

The family of the man who died has been informed.

A spokesman for Worcestershire County Council said the road was closed until 10pm on Wednesday.

PC Lee Baker is investigating the circumstances of the crash.

He said: “This is a very tragic incident in which a young man has lost his life.

Our thoughts go out to his friends and family at this sad time.

“We are not naming the man at this time and the Worcestershire coroner will be informed in due course.

“The A449 is a very busy stretch of road and I would appeal to anyone who saw the collision or either of the vehicles beforehand to contact us.” Witnesses are asked to call PC Baker on the nonemergency number 101 quoting 351S 211112.
