A LIFE-LONG football fan is doing his bit to save an ailing team from the threat of administration by organising a sponsored walk.
Jon Hale, who lives in the Cowleigh Road area of Malvern, was inspired to stage the event to help the troubled Blue Square Bet Premier club Hereford United after chairman, David Keyte, revealed their financial troubles.
The former Football League outfit owe £110,000 in tax payments and Mr Keyte says they need fresh investment to stay afloat.
Even before Mr Hale, 39, and a team of fans, former players and club staff, tackle the 20-mile route to Edgar Street from the Anchor in Yates Hay Road, on Saturday, November 24, more than £3,600 has been pledged to the cause.
Mr Hale went to his first game in March 1980 with his late father, David, who helped set up Hereford’s Vice Presidents’ Club in 1972, which saw the Bulls lose 2-1 to Stockport County.
He said: “When you have been going to games for 33 years the club becomes like an old friend, and when a friend is in trouble you feel the need to help. Noone wants to see this great club die.”
The group are hoping to gain more support and attract more of the club’s stars from past and present.
“We are looking for people to help at stop-off points along the way with water and refreshments. Maybe even bring a bucket for cars to stop and donate.
“We are also looking for one or two more stalwarts to join the last mile.”
Former Bulls defender Gareth Davies and top scorer Stewart Phillips, will complete the whole route.
Donations can be made via cheques made payable to Hereford United VP Development Fund, c/o Jon Hale, Hado Polythene, Spring Lane, Malvern, WR14 1AJ. For more information, go to facebook.com/HUFCwalk.
