FOLLOWING their very successful production of ‘Allo, ‘Allo two years ago, Worcester’s St John’s Players are turning their attention to the stage version of another television classic, Up Pompeii, by Miles Tredinnick.
The original series was peppered with wonderful characters like Ludicrus, Ammonia, Nauseus, Erotica, Voluptua and Senna. Orchestrating both plot and characters is the head slave Lurcio, who becomes embroiled in the sexual liaisons of his master’s household, as all its members cheat and misbehave.
The ever-helpful Lurcio conveys his thoughts to the audience by means of a series of innuendoes and double entendres.
Last year St John’s Players won a NODA Best Play Award for their production of Bedroom Farce so there’s a high standard to live up to, with the performers having to get used to togas, wigs, sandals and armour.
If you like your history treated in a light-hearted and somewhat risqué manner, this is the play for you.
Up Pompeii runs at Worcester’s Swan Theatre from Tuesday, October 2, until Saturday, October 6, starting at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from the Worcester Live box office on 01905 611427.
