A DRAMATIC new public art work was added to Malvern’s townscape this week.
Renowned sculptor Walenty Pytel oversaw the installation of his sculpture depicting two huge buzzards in Rosebank Gardens on Wednesday.
The sculpture was created to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, and funded by Malvern Town Council, Malvern Hills District Council and private donations.
It is not the first time that Mr Pytel has made a sculpture to mark a royal jubilee.
In 1977, a silver jubilee commemorative fountain depicting Great Britain’s heraldic beasts was unveiled outside the Houses of Parliament.
The Rosebank Gardens sculpture has been the dream of Malvern resident Peter Smith since 2005.
He said: “It looks absolutely magnificent.
“It’s been a long haul, but is worth it.”
Mr Pytel decided the subject of the work should be buzzards, birds that are frequently seen soaring over the hills.
“I visited Rosebank Gardens with Walenty in the very early stages of the project,” said Mr Smith.
“More recently he told me that this was to be his last major work.”
The £17,000 cost of the sculpture was paid for by contributions of £7,500 each from the town and district councils, with the remainder of the cash coming from other groups and individuals.
